Shell cordovan (or cordovan) is a vegetable tanned, world-famous leather made of a specific layer of horsehide - "cordovan". Cordovan can be found only in equine leather and, speaking scientifically, its nature is closer to cartilage than to skin. Cordovan is made by shaving tanned horse rumps. One horse rump yields only two oval pieces of cordovan - two shells, we never know what area we can work out of each rump: sometimes shells are large, other times they are small.
Thinking of that makes me extremely sad.
No horse is killed for its skin. The raw hides that we use are the by-products of the food industry. We work with repercussions of producing meat for human consumption.
We use our secret vegetable tanned recipes and technics that are centuries-old. Shell cordovan is a "vacchetta" type of leather that means it is slowly vegetable tanned and hot stuffed with animal greases. We set tanned rumps to rest after greasing for 1-2 month, during that time cordovan is "raping" becoming more pliable and durable.
Full production from raw horse wet-salted hides to finished shells might take up to six months to complete. Shell cordovan made in Toscana is one of the world’s finest leathers with inimitable durability and reach patina.
We've been producing shell cordovan for over than 30 years and became one of the most sufficient shell cordovan tannery in world. We sell directly from the tannery without mark-ups and middle men.
It is well-known that genuine shell cordovan is an "aniline" type of leathers: we only use water based dyes and never cover the surface with pigments or varnishes. Thus our shells are not water resistant yet extremely natural and patina extremely well. Your shell cordovan product will mature and patina over time exposing the unique character and absorbing your personal style of living.
If you're struggling to recover water stains, please try to wet and dry the entire surface of your shell or use special shell cordovan treatment products (cremes) to restore shine and uniform the surface.
If you think that only our shells have that lack, please google "shell cordovan water stains" and you'll find more information of the topic.
if your shell looks extremely uniform and/or does not absorb water - it is either covered with artificial pigments or finished with varnishes. We're proud of green nature of our leathers with all pros and cons.
